On 7th May 2023, the Trigun fan Twitter account maskofbun posted a tweet recommending the 2019 queer sci-fi book This Is How You Lose the Time War. What followed was a series of events that neither the account, nor the authors of the novella, could have expected.
The tweet went viral, leading to a sudden increase in sales of the book years after its initial release. The book has peaked at #3 on the Amazon bestseller's list overall, and #1 on science fiction.
The absurdity of it all was compounded by the fact that maskofbun's display name at the time was bigolas dickolas wolfwood, referencing the character of Nicholas D. Wolfwood (from Trigun Stampede) having a large penis. Memes about this point especially have arisen as a result.
Yoshihiro Watanabe, a producer of Trigun Stampede, tweeted that he now owned the book, and Amal El-Mohtar, one of the book's authors, responded that she intends to watch Trigun.[1] Articles about the event have been written by the likes of Kotaku, Tech Crunch, and Book Riot, whilst both Amal El-Mohtar and maskofbun have been interviewed by Slate[2] and Gizmodo respectively.
History
I truly cannot stress enough how lightning-struck-stunned I am & how utterly wonderful & bafflingly joyous this is, it's like you're out for a walk in your neighbourhood & turn a corner & suddenly are in Centaurworld[3]
