Despite being a canon pairing, the Roswell fandom considers the pairing as unconventional couple. The name Rebel was coined in the summer of 2000[1].
The pairing name is taken from Star Wars because Max/Tess fans felt that they were fighting for their couple against the Dreamers who wanted Max and Liz together[2].
