Tenctonese Tales is a gen Alien Nation anthology.

In the first issue, the editor wrote that she would "print "/" fiction, if it's well-written and in good taste."

Issue 1

Tenctonese Tales 1 was published in 1990 and contains 29 pages.

From the editor: "Because so much of the ALIEN NATION background is still unknown, our writers will often have to extrapolate and invent. Therefore, all fiction in this zine will be considered as taking place in an alternate AN universe."

The editorial:

Greetings and welcome to the first issue of TENCTONESE TALES! I hope you get as much pleasure from reading it as I got from putting it together. In one respect, I feel compelled to apologize that the biggest part of this issue consists of my own story. It was not, and is not, my intention to print something that is simply a showcase for one person's writing. However, I received no other story submissions, so I figured it was better to make a start with what I had and hope more people would send material once they actually saw an AN zine in print. That remains my hope, although I certainly plan to print my own stories also.

In my stories, I've attempted to stick as closely as possible to the background given in the series. However, where no background was established, I have invented my own. I hope other writers will feel free to do the same. In the absence of any guidelines as to the spelling of Tenctonese words, I've done the best I could. If there is ever an "official" guide available, I'll go by that when copy-editing material.

For any of you who are unfamiliar with fan publishing, here's my policy. Anyone who contributes fiction, artwork, poetry, cartoons, etcetera, will receive a complimentary copy of the issue in which their material is published. (I'm sorry, but for economic reasons, I cannot give out a free copy for just one joke or pun. However, if you compile a collection of jokes, puns, or other small items suitable for use, you will get a copy.)

In order to provide more space for fiction, I do not plan to have a lettercolumn. However, I welcome suggestions and feedback, both positive and negative, regarding TT. In fact, if you send me a truly fascinating and thought-provoking letter, I may ask you to turn it into an article for use in a future issue.

As far as actual writers guidelines go, the primary emphasis in this zine will be on fiction set in the AN universe, rather than articles about the show or the actors. It isn't necessary for you to deal with the characters from the series, although it is perfectly all right if that's what you wish to do. I will print "/" fiction, if it's well-written and in good taste. If you have an idea for something, but aren't sure it would be suitable for TT, contact me and tell me about it.

To keep this zine going, I need quality material, so come on all you creative fans out there: send me something! Just as important, I need lots of readers, so if you like what you see in these pages, spread the word. I can't do this alone.

  • For Matthew, on the Occasion of His Birthday, poem by Barbara Grassmick (2)
  • Away Down South by Kerry Lindemann-Schaefer ("This is the first in a continuing series of stories. Although each story has its own complete plot, some elements will he carried through and built upon in later segments. In order to avoid having to fill in all of what has gone before within each story, there will be a summary provided with succeeding installments for the sake of new readers. I realize this is a bit awkward, but it's better than re-hashing the information over and over again within the text of every story.") (3)

  • A Sense of Humor (cartoons by Linda Whitten, Donell [Daisy] Meadows, Laura Todd, Pat Cunningham and Nola Frame-Gray) (26)
