Template talk:TimelineInternet

From Fanlore
Jump to navigation Jump to search

This is intended for the Fandom and the Internet article, which needs some background on what was happening technologically to put the fandom stuff in context. The aim is to give an overview of internet infrastructure and some of the more significant parts of internet culture (with a focus on the 80s, 90s, and early 00s). Preference should be given to fandom-y parts of the internet, but that shouldn't be restricted to fic if roleplaying or general SF/anime/furry/etc. fandom activities were more significant.

Categories to include

  • Usenet - Major groups that had a wide influence, particularly if they also included fanworks or had spinoff groups that did
  • the web
    • Blog sites, free e-mail sites, etc. that fans from lots of parts of fandom used
    • Unusually significant single-fandom archives and hubs
  • E-mail - major development in the availability of non-academic accounts, free accounts, easy-to-run mailing lists, etc.

Dates

Dates are based on when things were actually available to the public (as closely as I can determine). Companies like AOL often went through several incarnations before the one that had fanfic or show discussion forums or other things conducive to fandom.

Colors and Organization

A list of pre-defined colors can be found here. It's fine to change the current ones to a more pleasing combination. Please keep entries in a given category together and in order of age. This will make the timeline more readable for people who can't see the colors (either because of color blindness or issues with their monitor).
