Note on the Restoration

I think I should add something here, since the restoration of the site was considerable. I started out with (a) and ended with (b)—and, on the face of it, the difference is pretty extreme.

The background is especially problematic. Simply turning it black, after all, would have been sufficient to make the text readable (and was, of course, my first step). However, there had been a graphic.

I tried posting on FORKNI-L to see if anyone still recalled the original CotK site well enough to help me. The response I got from Margie Hammet was daunting: she gave me some of the affiliation's history, making it clear that she considered the current site to be the "real" faction site and was therefore quite doubtful that we should include the original site in the archive at all.

Her fears were assuaged by careful wording on the ToC, the addition of a new index page making the history clear, and a "robots" file to keep the original site from being directly googleable.

At first, though, Margie said she had no memory of the original site, barring the fact of its existence. Later, she wrote, "Thinking about an earlier website is giving me strange feelings about some ghostly sort of thing." Given my inferences about the background tile (and the resultant appearance of the restored webpages), this was very encouraging.

After the site had been added to the archive, Margie wrote that, once she saw the restored version, she remembered the site. Given the dominant impression that any background graphic has to the eye, this makes me quite hopeful that I did indeed get that aspect of the restoration correct. --Greer Watson (talk) 15:34, 25 July 2013 (UTC)
