Talk:Pastfic

I found this page editing the White Collar page. I was looking for Backstory which does not exist as a page. I've never heard the term Pastfic before, but that could be just not being in the right parts of fandom. I'm having a hard time seeing that the two terms mean distinctly different things. Isn't Pastfic by it's nature backstory or is there a difference I just don't see? We could make a page for backstory that references this one, or should we combine the two concepts in one page? Any thoughts?
- I think they could be combined. I think "backstory" is slightly different than what the various pre-canon terms refer to in that you usually talk about backstory for a specific character as a character exploration, whereas pre-canon can also mean just an adventure or episode like story set earlier, also "backstory" does not necessarily have to be in the past, especially for minor and recurring characters. For these backstory can be also what they are doing during the timeline of canon, as we don't see a lot of their life.
- I also have not seen the term "pastfic" often, but usually that is because fandoms use more specific ones (like the ones listed in the articles), with the most general I know "pre-series", but that is not good term for anything that is not a series of some kind either.--RatCreature 18:58, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- Maybe if backstory got its own paragraph in the article? I think it should have something separate from the rest at least. (Also, could you maybe sign your comments? there is a button in the editor, the second from the right with the squiggly line.)--RatCreature 19:27, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- Oops, forgot all about the need for a manual signature. I don't know what to think to be honest. It would be just as quick to make a new page that expands on the idea, and then the existing wiki links would go to that. I think I'm hesitating to make a really short page of info that's mostly covered elsewhere, but unless Backstory is a heading level item on this page, you can't link directly to it. --facetofcathy 19:38, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
