Genderswap in Japanese-language fandom (salad):

"I asked tammaiya about this (because she's super observant and is fluent/reads the raws) because I only half-remembered the answer. The genderswap thing is referred to as "salad" because the full tag is "sarada o tabete kaizoku-ou ni naru!", ie, "I will eat salad and become the pirate king!" Oda did the genderswap thing first (in one of the SBS things) and it's a reference to how Luffy's usually all about MEEEAAATT, so genderswapped Luffy would be all about SALAAAADDDDD. I think Oda may have done sketches of some of the crew (hence why Pixiv is so uniform about it?) or maybe just their heads, but without having the SBS onhand, I'm not 100% on that."

OP fandom in other languages

I don't suppose anyone knows anything? I know there's a Spanish-language fandom because I've seen them on Tumblr but other than that, I know nothing about it. - inkstone 09:08, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

Maybe to start the section off, we could mention Spanish OP fics at ff.net. (40 pages and 994 fics as of today!)

Western-centric & Othering POVs

Hi -- I've been following the changes on the article and um, was it really necessary to change In Japan, fandom is less of a niche and is more common in everyday activities. to In Japan, manga reading is less of a niche hobby and more an everyday activity for many, much like watching TV? This is rather obvious statement to say the least, but how it phrased is rather alienating and Othering (i.e. manga reading, an everyday activity for many, much like watching TV). It assumed that the default reader is not someone who live in Japan, marking them as an outsider/foreigner, and re-default, for the lack of better words, the audience to a Western one. It's really upsetting to read this especially since I think inkstone worked really hard on making this article have a neutral/multiple POVs where in particular Japanese fans are not assumed invisible & non-existent. --wistfuljane 03:42, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

How about we drop that sentence entirely and change it to something like "In Japan, the manga is considered a phenomenon." or "In Japan, the manga is considered a living legend." We'll bring the focus back to One Piece since that is the subject of the article. It is pretty much universally acknowledged as being that manga that comes once every two decades type of deal, just like Dragon Ball was. (It took over a decade for One Piece to match and then surpass Dragon Ball's sales.) - inkstone 09:03, 24 May 2011 (UTC)

That sounds like a fun idea. Do you think it should go into the Japanese fandom section or should it get its own dedicated section beneath Fandom? I have no idea if fans from other parts of the world write in to SBS corner. - inkstone 14:17, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

In it's own section, maybe? Didn't a French fan club write in to SBS once? Odacchi was wow~ they're years behind, but enjoying OP :) :) And I think he's mentioned getting fan letters that he can't actually read.

Oh, that's true! He does give shout-outs to various countries that pick up serialization, I think. And now that I think about it, someone on tumblr talked about how their question was answered! This will probably require a visit to the One Piece wiki and read their SBS section. ^^;

I love how much fun he has with his fans. I've seen mangaka talk about themselves in side-columns, but in my (admittedly not vast!) experience, I haven't seen a lot of direct creator-fan interaction the way OP has. --Anenko 15:28, 26 May 2011 (UTC)

Salad

Do you think salad should have a glossary page of it's own? Or maybe a redirect to the appropriate section in the OP article (is it even possible to create a redirect to a subsection?). I think it's fascinating. I'd noticed how similar the OP genderswap fanart posted to Tumblr is, but hadn't realized the reason for it. --Anenko 23:12, 6 June 2011 (UTC)

That's a thought. Do you think it's enough to warrant an article of its own? (I don't know if we can redirect to a subsection either.) The full tag on Pixiv is actually: The pirate king is eating salad. (Which is kind of hilarious in and of itself.)
