Talk:Nancy Taylor

I am thinking of splitting this page into three, for the author and her pseudonyms. When I e-mailed her, she had reservations. However, she says she has no objection to info about her gen writing. -- Greer Watson 00:25, 25 August 2010 (UTC)

If you let the wiki committee know which pages are affected, we can hide the edit history. Otherwise, anyone can go to the History tab and see all the pseuds.--æthel 01:42, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
And...the slate has been wiped clean.--æthel 04:20, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Ahhhh! I spoke too soon. Several of her zines link to this page, and it's hard to tell with Sentinel, but some of them are labeled slash.
I added the gen Sentinel website since it has her name on it. The page also mentions awards that I think could be added here. Has she won Forever Knight fanfic awards as well? Right now the page really downplays her writing.--æthel 05:23, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
I agree, this may get problematic because she won Sentinel awards and published Sentinel under Nancy Taylor. As long as there is some linkage that holds the pseuds and the fandoms and awards together and we avoid creating orphan entries, we should be fine (ex if you unlink the Sentinel slash from Nancy Taylor, you'll need to create a new name [redacted] to hold those stories and awards together). That way you won't be distorting the award history for all the Nancy Taylors and it'll still fall within the name guidelines [redacted].
So... [redacted] and Nancy Taylor = Forever Knight and gen Sentinel
re FK: yes she won several awards as Nancy Taylor. See http://foreverknight.wikia.com/wiki/The_Forever_Knight_Fan_Fiction_Awards and http://www.nancykam.com/2001awards/fanficawards.htm --Morgandawn 06:45, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
Her name needs to go back on the individual zine article pages in some fashion: [redacted] or whatever. That, and her last name should be redacted from the image. --Mrs. Potato Head 11:59, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
One thing to keep in mind: she already has an online pseud [redacted] that is used on one zine page here. Another zine lists Nancy Taylor as the author, but the link to the online version of the story lists that pseud instead. So, could we [redacted]?--æthel 14:01, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
[redacted]--æthel 14:11, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
This raises the problem of not having identifiers for the overlapping abbreviated names. So one possibility: we abbreviate the slash Nancy Taylors to [redacted]? Then go back and replace the slash Nancy Taylors (I counted around 5-6 across zine TOCs and Awards) with [redacted]. Here's an example of a slash Nancy Taylor that we could abbreviate [redacted]. I see some data has already been lost in places so we'd need to go back through the various permutataions to restore the linkages. [redacted] If you want, I'd be happy to help.--Morgandawn 17:20, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
I'd be happy to have you run with this, Morgan, and the sooner the better so we don't lose too much. We need to redact the name off of the front of the zines as well. --Mrs. Potato Head 18:03, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
OK, I'll give it a try. I'll come back here if I need help with some of the redirects.--Morgandawn 18:49, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
I just set up [redacted]--æthel 18:54, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
OK, if no one objects, I am going to remove all the slash Sentinel redirects that have Nancy Taylor's full name in them (I just replaced these links with corrected links). And then I will [redacted]. Have I missed anything/need to fix anything? --Morgandawn 19:24, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
I've done [redacted]--Morgandawn 20:37, 25 August 2010 (UTC)
I've deleted the redirect pages, and I'm almost done hiding edit history. Then I'll come back here to redact the hell out of this talk page :)--æthel 01:30, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
æthel and Morgan deserve a medal for this massive project... --Mrs. Potato Head 01:35, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

I have two more pages to hide the edit history for--Amy might be able to set up a batch hide-edit-history bot that could also be useful if we ever have to do this again. :) But in the meantime I've removed links and sensitive info from this page so that it won't get cached in Google.--æthel 16:24, 26 August 2010 (UTC)

Renaming Checklist

This was a tricky one. I wish we had a better workflow for un-linking authors who have multiple names/pseuds, zines and awards. There are the redirects, the zine covers plus the history. I made up a workflow as I went, but a checklist would have been helpful. Like:

  • verify that the author has attempted to unlink the names/pseuds outside of Fanlore (ex. is this an author who has both names/pseuds on her home page or already linked them together in an archive?)
  • check to see if the multiple names/pseuds are in play here on Fanlore
  • check to see of they are linked together on Fanlore. If not, no need to do anything. If they are, take notes of what they are and where they are located.
  • Create a roadmap of how you plan to seperate out the names/pseuds. Try not to remove info or substitute names without discussion. For example, using the first name last initial may solve the problem for one name. Using only a first name may work for the second name etc. Or simply not linking the two names/pseuds will work for both.
  • if there are any overlaps with existing names create a disamb page and attach an indentifier to your person. (ex. If there are two Mary Sues, you might call your Mary Sue = Mary Sue (Sentinel). Or Mary Sue (zine publisher).
  • Then start editing keeping your re-naming/unlinking consistent. Places to check: zine page titles, tables of contents, fandom zine lists and zine cover images.
  • When done, the edit history may need to be redacted. Contact a gardener and give them a list of pages.

...or something like that....like I said, I am making this up as I go. --Morgandawn 01:51, 26 August 2010 (UTC)
