Talk:Merlin (BBC) RPF

My knowledge about this fandom is very limited. One thing that I as a casual fan find interesting is that while this fandom got started long after the wide-open SPN RPF and bandom communities on LJ, the Merlin RPF communities are partly locked, and locked fic is common in the fandom. I would love for someone to fill in that history here.

Some other topics off the top of my head to give consideration to:

• common story tropes and characterization, and how those differ/are the same as the FPF writing.
• how deep into reality Merlin RPF writers like to go--do they include real family or friends?
• is this a fandom that tries to get the setting Wales/France/England correct, or do they handwave it?
• is Colin Morgan's accent really that impenetrable or is that fanon?
• is there a lot of AUs in this fandom, and are there FPF AUs that are virtually RPF fics in disguise?

WRT locked communities and posts, I feel like I read something somewhere that it was following a tradition from Doctor Who where RPF is less common and often locked down because there's a lot more contact between show creators and fans than with US shows. Or maybe it's partly to do with a lot of people coming in from SGA and HP which also don't have much public fic. I really don't know much about it though, just hoping I can spark someone else's memory.

Bradley's said that when he first met Colin he couldn't understand anything he was saying, so I think a lot of fic is riffing of that. Sophinisba 19:33, 27 March 2010 (UTC)
