Tales of Symphonia is an action role-playing game first released in 2003 for the GameCube. Part of the Tales series, it features a large cast of characters and an affection system that means the main character, Lloyd Irving, can achieve a different ending based on which character the player spends the most positive time with. Not all of the endings are explicitly romantic.
The sequel, Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World, is less popular among fans and has faced criticism as a follow-up to the series.
Canon
Tales of Symphonia starts in Iselia, where Lloyd Irving, Genus Sage, and Colette Brunel have grown up. Colette is the Chosen, destined to go on a journey around the world to regenerate the world and become an angel. Colette is supposed to go with Genus’s sister, Raine, and a mercenary named Kratos as her escorts on the journey, but Lloyd and Genus accidentally anger the Desians, an evil group of half-elves who run a prison camp nearby, and are forced to leave Iselia after the Desians attack the village in retaliation. They travel, unlocking each of the four seals and slowly progressing Colette’s transformation into an Angel. Nearly too late, they learn that the Chosen’s journey is not what it seems, and the group begins working to save not only the world of Sylverant, but also Colette and another world altogether.
