Reactions and Reviews

This story has Spock returning to Vulcan for a second marriage and this time, the bonding occurs without incident and he enters pon farr with the expectation that offspring will result. The portrayal of Spock is really rather heart-breaking as he experiences a brief space of time where he is content: finally able to fit into Vulcan society with a compatible mate who accepts his hybrid nature and Starfleet career. The deal-breaker is when pon farr does not result in a pregnancy and it is determined Spock had been rendered sterile when exposed to the light to kill the creatures which had attacked him on Deneva. His wife chooses to end the marriage and pursue another mate because she wants offspring and refuses Spock's suggestion of adoption or pursuing artificial means of creating a pregnancy. The brief look of Spock in a domestic environment is well-written and the reader experiences Spock's loss of coming so close to finally assuming the role of a husband in Vulcan society. The rest of story is of Spock searching for Kirk who has taken an extended leave after dropping Spock off on Vulcan. Spock's marriage troubles Kirk and he seeks temporary refuge in a monastery to come to some measure of peace with losing Spock. This part of the story was a little hard for me accept - Kirk is such an active personality, I don't really see him pursuing meditation as a way to address troubles in his life. Still, it was an interesting way to put Kirk in the role which Spock is normally portrayed - running away to learn mental disciplines to help him deal with confusing thoughts and emotions. [1]
