Reactions and Reviews

This story really needed to be thought through more carefully. Kirk reassures Spock through the link, which means the link is open and we're told that it's OK for Kirk to help a psychically broadcasting Deltan. If Kirk and Spock are in psychic contact, Spock would be receiving the Deltan's pain and emotions right then and there. Later Spock is affected by a Deltan because he doesn't realize that an unconscious Deltan could become conscious. The idea that broken antennae could be fixed with a helmet is like believing that a severed foot could be affixed with scotch tape. This is a part of the Andorian anatomy. The connection between the antennae and the brain has been broken. There is no reason why a helmet should alleviate this at all. I did think the healing circle in which Kirk and Spock participated to help the surviving mate of a bonded pair was a nice moment, but I wish the rest of the story had been as well-written. [1]

This is a fascinating planet, with its earthquakes and its animal preserve. The rescue operation— Vulcans, Humans, Deltans, working with one another's strengths and weaknesses— is extremely well thought out. The bondmate relationship between Spock and Kirk, and their friendship with McCoy, are warm and believable. [2]

This is a well-done and very interesting story. I liked the thought of having a whole world for animal preservation; and the touch about the Andorians using the cheaper building materials made the point! The ideas of just how being traumatized would affect the Andorian and Deltan people and the different ways which were necessary to treat them were quite imaginative and believable. The scene where all the Vulcans gathered together to help the Vulcan whose bondmate had died accept her Katra into himself was fascinating. And I liked seeing so many beings of various races working together. [3]
