Subspace Communications is a Star Trek anthology of fiction and non-fiction. It had a Klingon focus.

The plan was for it to be published six times a year.

The publishers of this zine had some sort of formal agreement with L.O.O.T. (Loyal Order of Trekkers) International as members in that New York club received issues of "Subspace Communications" with their membership.

It is likely that though this zine begins with v.2, that this issue was the very first one.

While the plan was for this zine to have been published six times a year and to, of course, have a long run, the zine series appears to have had a quick demise. From the third issue:

Dear Earthers. This is the next to last issue you will receive before your subscription runs out. We are therefore asking you to renew. Unfortunately, Subspace will go out of print as of next June. Because of this, we can no longer offer full year subscriptions. You can still order a 1/2 year renewal... but please check the 1/2 year subscription box only. Not sure to renew or not? Please don't let the disruptors aimed at your house affect the decision in any way! -- Kor

But then, they say that on Earth, there is a sucker born every minute. You proved it. You bought this fanzine!") (1)

From the essay by Kor (and written "in character"):

There are two breeds of people that attend Star Trek conventions. First there are the fans. The fans are motivated to go by the love of Star Trek. Next are the dealers. Dealers are also motivated by love: the love of money. I am a dealer. Gene Roddenberry is a dealer. President Ford is a dealer. Just about anyone who believes in the great institution of Capitalism is a dealer..at one time or another.

What is a dealer? For you slow Earthers that can't figure this out, a dealer is someone who deals in something. I deal in fanzines, Roddenberry deals in television shows, Ford deals in recessions. No matter what a dealer has, if he can talk someone into buying an item, he will...especially if the item is related to Star Trek.

[...]

Dealers know what they are say ing when they quote the fact that there is a sucker born every minute. Dealers are really a special breed of parasites that pry on a person's weaknesses. You Earthers deserve it though. That's because you're soft. You're all soft. No, wait. There is one Earther that isn't soft... well, never mind.

Dealers know that Star Trek fans get status from the amount of Star Trek items that they have in their possession; There are certain items, like fanzines, that tend to give more status to Trekkers than others. That reminds me... Many of you have subscriptions up for renewal. Many of you also coincidentally have sonic disrupters aimed at your house, hint hint.

If this is really getting to you though, I must tell you that this really isn't as bad as it sounds. The Omni-powerful dealers can be stopped. Remember: They can fool some of the people all of the time, and all of the people some of the time, but the IRS likes five year audits. Now who said Ford had a better idea?
