The Star Trek Association of Irvine, known as STAI by its members, was a student organization at the University of California at Irvine (UCI) dedicated to "alternate realities". The club's publications were collected by the UCI archives. The club pubished the RAPA zine.

"No founding documents were found in the collection, but materials indicate that the association was active from 1977 to 1991. The interests of STAI members went beyond the television program, Star Trek and extended to animation, fantasy, horror, and science fiction. The club met the first and third Fridays of every month. STAI had a library of over 2,000 books and a video library that included nearly all of the Star Trek episodes." [1]

Some 2020 Comments by a Fan

A former member recalls STAI fondly:

I attended the University of California at Irvine from 1978 to 1980, and was a member of the club during that time. We had regular meetings, where people could borrow from the reading library of ST books and zines, conduct business, have skits or games, and often go out to the local Denny's afterwards for food and continued conversation.

I remember our club's Captain (President) was an extra in the crowd scene of the crew in "Star Trek:The Motion Picture". And how when it opened we all sat or stood in line together together to see it. Afterwards we went to a restaurant and discussed the film. The costumes! The ship! Great to finally have a movie, but... Lol.

We often did club events like going to Disneyland or the Museum of Science and Technology. (We were in Orange County, CA., after all.) And we would have a club table on campus during college events like the Wayzgoose.

Sometimes we went to someone's house for a special party such at the Fourth of July or to play tabletop role-playing games. And I discovered "Doctor Who" because of an Episode Guide to the older episodes I found in the STAI library. Joined a local DW club, too.

Such great times. I am sad to hear it no longer exists, but I am so very glad that it was there in my day! [2]
