SPY×FAMILY is a spy comedy manga created by Tatsuya Endo in 2019. An anime adaption began releasing in the Spring of 2022, and it was very popular.

Overview

In a lightly ficitionalized take on 1960s East Germany, a spy known as Twilight is given a deep-cover mission ("Operation Strix") to gain access to Donovan Desmond, the reclusive leader of a radical political party. To do this, he takes on the identity of Loid Forger, psychiatrist, and assembles a fake family of Yor Briar (secretly a mob assassin known as "the Thorn Princess") and Anya (secretly a mind-reading esper). The plan is to enroll Anya at the same prestigious school as Desmond's sons, and either ingratiate Anya with the young son Damian or rely on the parent social connections to get access to Donovan. But can the Forger family complete their mission while keeping secrets from each other?

Main Characters

  • Agent Twilight, aka Loid Forger: the secret agent for WISE who undertakes Operation Strix. He does not know the secret identities of his wife and daughter.
  • Anya Forger: an orphan, who Loid adopts for the sake of Operation Strix and is secretly an esper. Her powers allow her to know everyone's secrets, but she tries to hide this for fear of being recaptured and experimented on by the government.
  • Yor Forger, née Briar, aka the Thorn Princess: secretly a deadly assassin for the Garden, Yor agrees to pretend to be Loid's wife to help maintain respectability in her day job as a clerk at city hall. She does not know the secret identities of her daughter and husband.
  • Bond: a dog with the ability to see the future, adopted into the Forger family
  • Yuri Briar: Yor's younger brother who works for the State Secret Police
  • Frankie: Loid's friend and provider of spy gadgets
  • Sylvia Sherwood, aka Fullmetal Lady: Agent Twilight's handler at WISE
  • Fiona Frost, aka Agent Nightfall: a fellow WISE agent with a crush on Twilight
  • Damian Donovan: son of the target of Operation Strix and frenemy of Anya at school.
  • Becky Blackwell: daughter of a wealthy military manufacturer and Anya's friend at school.
  • The Garden Assassins Syndicate: simply known as Garden, is an assassin group that operates within Ostania and which Yor Forger works for as "Thorn Princess."

Fandom

Because the manga is released concurrently in English, there may be less involvement of English-language scanlation.[citation needed] In the very early days before uniform translations, there was some ambiguity, such as Yor's name often transliterated as "Yoru" and Loid spelled as "Lloyd".

The manga received high praise and a decent amount of fandom attention on its own, with over 300 works posted to AO3 before the anime adaption was announced on October 30th, 2021.[1] Since the anime began airing in April 2022, fandom interest has greatly increased (as tends to happen with anime adaptions), and as of June 2022 there are over 1550 works in the manga and anime fandom tags on AO3.[2] There was a concurrent surge of fanart posted on Tumblr, Twitter, and other social media sites.

While the canon ship of Loid/Yor is quite popular in the fandom and several other ships get notable traffic, the primary enthusiasm in the fandom was for the family relationships the Forgers were building and the comedy of all the pile-up of secret identities. This was especially true of the manga-only fandom, and as the anime has gained popularity several ships (especially Damianya) have gained more traction, though familial and other gen relationships remain popular.
