Springtrap is a main antagonist and animatronic from the Five Nights at Freddy's series, first appearing in FNAF 3. While this iteration of the character is sometimes referred to by his human name, William Afton, Springtrap is used more often by fans. Before receiving his canon name and becoming Springtrap he was referred to as "Purple Guy" by fans of FNAF 2.
Though William Afton, Springtrap, and Purple Guy are all the same character, Purple Guy in fanon before FNAF 3 may be separated enough from Springtrap as to be considered a different character by some.
Canon
Springtrap is an animatronic with the corpse of a human- William Afton (or "Purple Guy")- trapped inside of it. He is the main antagonist of the FNAF series, kicking off the events in FNAF 1 by murdering several children, including his own daughter Elizabeth Afton who would become Circus Baby from FNAF 6.
Though Springtrap has been defeated or killed many times over, he usually finds a way to perpetuate and become the antagonist of the next FNAF game.

Fan Theories
After FNAF 2 and before FNAF 3, fans came up with the name "Purple Guy" to refer to the vague purple figure from FNAF 2 who was shown luring and murdering children. They came up with many theories as to his identity and backstory, and with the release of the FANF book Silver Eyes began to piece together that Purple Guy's name is William Afton. However, some fans thought that Purple Guy and Springtrap were not the same person, and debated which one of them was truly William Afton. However this theory did not appear to gain much traction, as responses to it were negative. One part of this theory as explained by Steam user Nathant999 is that "Springtrap is not purple," and this is quoted below.
Another thing that lets us know that Afton is not Purple Guy is the fact that he is not purple. Let me explain. The cutscenes from Sister Location's custom night show the Purple Guy, the one who was scooped at the end of Sister Location, literally turning purple from the decay of his skin. We know it was the player because we see Ennard "jump" out of them in the last cutscene before the Golden Freddy mode cutscene. In the book, despite the fact that it takes place after Sister Location, Afton is not described as looking purple.nathant999, Dec 29, 2016[1]
