Space Battleship Yamato is a an anime franchise consisting of an anime, TV series, manga, and several films (both animated and live action). It is one of the most influential anime franchises.
An American adaption, called Star Blazers, had a dedicated western fandom in the 1980s and was important to the early history of American anime fandom. YamatoCon, the first independent anime convention held in the United States, and earlier "Star Blazer Minicons", had Starblazers/Yamato as its main topic.[1][2]

Among anime fans more generally, the franchise was known for the 1983 sequel film Final Yamato holding the record the longest animated film at 163 minutes (though this record was surpassed in 2019). [3]
Star Wars and SBY have been compared for their similar settings and plot beats, although Yamato predated Star Wars by several years. [4]
