Southern Style is the Newsletter of the DeForest Kelley Association of Fans. They include con reports and ads, Kelley's Kredits, interviews, tributes, and more. There are at least fifteen issues.
Fan Comments
The fan club’s President was Karolyn Popovich. She and her co-editor KathE Donnelly as well as De’s fans contributed to this wonderful newsletter. It was full of pictures, articles, fanfic, convention info, new Star Trek movie info from Gene Roddenberry & Paramount Studios, lists & reviews of De’s movie and TV appearances (called Kelley’s kredits) and pen-pal info. They also printed out a few zines called “I’m a Doctor, not a...”. When this newsletter arrived in the mail, I always scurried to my room to read and re-read it cover to cover. [1]

We were pleased at the amount of positive response we received from the questionaire in the last issue of SOUTHERN STYLE. KathE and I gathered all the comments together and came up with the following: members would like to see more stories, poetry and comments concerning De Kelley/Dr. McCoy in each issue. Since not all the members are interested in having a fanzine published once a year (several felt that we should publish a fanzine at least three times a year, but printing costs are just toe high — for this idea) we have decided to expand each issue of the newsletter. By doing this we can use more of the stories and such that you all send in as well as make the newsletter more interesting to'read. We will also continue to have our special features such as Kelley's Kredits, Spotlight, Birthday Greetings and Con reports as available. We are also hoping to arrange with De Kelley a coluiun of questions and answers and will keep you informed as it developes. Because the newsletter will contain more information and because of printing costs we will be forced to limit the issues to four times a year instead of six. You will be receiving a newsletter in February, May, August and November. This issue will mark the first SOUTHERN STYLE using the new format. Since we will be publishing more stories and poems we urge all DKAFers to send in your contributions now. We hope you will all find the new format for the newsletter to your liking and as always your comments, suggestions and ideas are always welcome.
I am happy to report that the club's fanzine "I'M A DOCTOR, NOT A..."II is now available. For those who sent in advanced orders, your zines are in the mail and you should receive them within the next week. For other members interested in ordering the zine - send $4,25 ($3.50 plus first class postage) to the club address. I would now like to thank all those who contributed to the zine. Once again we had several good stories to choose from and we found the decision of what to include at times difficult. I hope you will all enjoy our efforts and I look forward to receiving your comments.
The review of Planet of Judgement:
If you have read the story - PLANET OF JUDGEMENT - please write the publisher, and author for their lack of respect for the show, the idea and the fans. For one thing, the language, is out of place with the 20th century 'crude' of s.o.b. and g.d. is out of place and not fitting into the 22nd century.
Secondly, the characters were treated shabbily, and out of tune, and step. For one thing, McCoy was made to look like a "john" in his younger days, rather than a doctor who is more involved with his patients rather than his home life...
And McCoy's loose use of "crude" is hardly to be condoned - no way... for one thing, he would not use such language in the presence of the women crewmembers - he does know the difference between the girls and boys in more ways then his profession calls for...this is derogatory to the character...
I would suggest that they write us an apology... Afterall, can we allow this ladies?? I should say not!
