SortaCon took place in February 1983. It was a con with a focus on media characters in science fiction shows.

a flyer printed in SLAYSU #5
[From SLAYSU #5]:

SortaCon, for those of you who haven't heard, takes place this February 17-21, 1983 at the Hanalei Hotel, maybe. That's if they fix the roof by then. It fell in last night. I may move it across the freeway. This is gonna be one hell of a...sorta a...convention. You see, we decided that fans get together to talk to each other, not to sit through panels, watch films they've seen hundreds of times — I know, I know, it's more fun with fen... So the entire thing is geared for the talkers! Like me...

We will have films, but they're going to be on video in the hotel rooms — two channels. The list of films and TV shows is way over 200 titles so far, including lots of Trek episodes. The Doctor is next. Who? Yeah, him, too.

We're Roasting Papasan George Lucas after the banquet. Hee, hee, hee. We've invited Indy, Marion, Leia, Han, Piett, Yoda, Luke, THX 1138, Belloq, and Wedge. The gang's going to tell Lucas what they think of him, whether Papasan shows up or not. We're also going to the world famous Reuben H. Fleet Space Theatre as a group, included in the membership price, to see "Tomorrow in Space." The affair (oh, that word) will be catered, so don't eat first.

From a Flyer

Membership is limited to 400, the Banquet is limited to 200, so hurry! Membership for five days is $20, the Banquet and Roast is $23, and a dealer's table is $20 (membership not included).

GEORGE LUCAS ROAST: Come to our Polynesian Buffet Banquet and for your entertaining pleasure we'll Roast our leader George Lucas (alive or not) in the best Dean Martin tradition.

24 HOUR VIDEO: Two channels non-stop! In your hotel room! No more "Sit down up there!" and "Shhh!" — Just kick back, lie down, invite a few friends and laugh out loud. Major films, TV shows, and amateur video will be presented.

RAP ROOMS: Instead of panels, we have seven rooms to hold discussions on topics of your choice, filksings, D & D, and anything else legal. Let us know what you want to talk about!
