Slayage Conference on the Whedonverses is a con hosted by Slayage: The Journal of Whedon Studies and The Whedon Studies Association.

2004

The first Slayage Conference on Buffy the Vampire Slayer was held in Nashville, Tennessee on May 28-30, 2004, and was hosted by Middle Tennessee State University.

In addition to the academic papers, vidders Luminosity and Sisabet were invited by David Lavery to host a special: " SCREENING AND DISCUSSION OF BUFFY FANVIDEOS BY LUMINOSITY AND SISABET" on Saturday evening and with a panel discussion on Sunday afternoon.

Below is Luminosoty's journal post, posted here with permission:

The vid show! It was better than I could have hoped, better than I could have imagined. At 8 o'clock, the people started coming in, and the place really sort of filled up. I took a deep breath, thanked Dr Lavery for inviting us, said that I felt privileged to be there, and told the audience that vids were like little mini-movies--to sit down and shut up and not to sing along even if they knew the words, etc., etc. That we were giving away seven DVD sets of the show afterwards, and if anyone was interested, during the break, they could go put their names in the box on the table at the back. We turned off the lights and started the show.

Playlist for Part One:

  • End of the World - me
  • Fragile - myrtleneunice
  • The Story Ends - tzikeh
  • I Love LA - me
  • The Woman's Work - sue_donym
  • Strange Disease - crazygrrl
  • Nothing at All - carol and jackie
  • Behind Blue Eyes - shalott
  • Last Stand - sisabet
  • Torn - j.c.
  • Superstar - heresluck
  • Flyin' Shoes - myrtleneunice
  • Horoscope - carol and jackie
  • Transparent - laura shapiro
  • Family Tradition - sisabet
  • Detour - vrya
  • Rebel Yell - me

During the break, there was a stampede back to the table to put their names in the box. The break was for about 15 minutes. I dimmed the lights, and some guy came up to me and complained that he didn't have a chance to put his name in the box. I told him that I was sorry, that he had 15 minutes, and the subtext was pretty much "don't go pee if you want to be in the raffle." I mean, for crying out loud! The lights were off, and Cowboy was starting. Sit the hell down!! Then we went on.

Playlist for Part Two:

  • Cowboy - sisabet
  • My Beautiful Reward - gwyneth r
  • Some Fantastic - laura shapiro
  • Atropine - heresluck
  • SW Voodoo - shimmertwins
  • Schism - vrya
  • Without Me - sisabet
  • Serenity - me
  • So Real - me
  • Prophecy - me
  • Peacekeeper - sisabet
  • The Other Side - me
  • Whatever - sisabet and me
  • Paradise - sisabet
  • The End - me
I couldn't really hear what was going on in the audience from where I was up in the front, but I could hear the applause when each vid was done. I could also hear the stunned silences and then the applause as well, which happened on Superstar, Schism, So Real and Whatever (hysterical laughter too). We vidders just... yearn for that extra moment when the audience is so caught up that they forget to react. There were also sniffles out there for The Other Side and Paradise, which was also tres cool. I think the audience began to *get* vids around Superstar, because I remember hearing them get louder and louder, and I could hear discussion going on *during* the vids. In another con, that would have pissed me off, but not here. Here was something that these guys had never even had an inkling of an idea about, and they *had* to discuss, even if the vids were running. I totally understand that. After the show, I thanked them all for coming, pulled names out of the box, and sisabet handed out vid sets. You would have thought these people were 5 years old and it was Christmas morning. It was thrilling.[1]

Regarding the Sunday panel discussion:

Sunday, sisabet and I had our panel. I had stagefright, and I think she did too, but we pressed onward. We showed several vids that we had presented the night before, plus some that we hadn't, and every few vids, we'd pause the DVD and talk about it.

Playlist for Our Panel:

  • End of the World - me
  • Cowboy - sisabet
  • The Other Side - me
  • I Love LA - me
  • Essence - sisabet
  • Closer - sisabet
  • SW Voodoo - shimmertwins (jaime and me)
  • Evil Angel - me
  • Fool For Love - me
  • Whatever - sisabet and me
  • Peacekeeper - sisabet
  • So Real - me
  • Serenity - me
  • Paradise - sisabet
  • The End - me
We talked a little bit about history of vids and aesthetics and ideas and timing on vids, etc. The room was full, and I was very nervous, but as I talked, the nerves wore off. After the panel, neither sisabet nor I could remember what we said. Also, at the end of the panel, we showed my new vid Sex on Wheels and sisabet's vid in progress.[2]

Vidding: A History states:

Luminosity described showing vids at 2003’s Slayage,[3] an academic Buffy the Vampire Slayer convention, and getting only condescension in the panel that followed, with one male scholar referring to “your little movies” and a woman academic asking where the male vidders were, implying that if men weren’t doing it, it was only a hobby, not art.[4]
