Terminology

Fourth Wall

Like many musical theater fandoms, the Fourth Wall is practically nonexistant within fandom. Fans are able to meet actors after the show, share fanart, and interact freely on social media websites. This can lead to controversy when actors do not like the content any given fan is creating. For instance, in 2020, a Big Name Fan with the username peculiar__star on Instagram was contacted by the official account and asked to delete some pieces of fanart that "made the Queens a bit uncomfortable." Much of the reaction is lost to time, but opinions were split on whether this was appropriate or not. Some fans believed it was within the rights of the actors whose likenesses were being drawn to request it be removed, particularly due to concerns over racism the art pieces, which feature characters of color. One of them shows a white character holding leashes of the other characters, who are drawn as children. The other shows Anne Boleyn in an unflattering position, in a meme redraw asking someone to respond to her text. However, others believed that regardless of the content of the images, fandom is and ought to be separate from the creators.
