Reactions and Reviews
1992
This is an emotionally intense story about Kirk coming to terms with Edith Keeler's death on Vulcan. it's beautifully written and I appreciated the fact that Kirk's relationship with Edith was treated as important by both Spock and the author. [1]
I'm a fairly new reader of K/S (nine months), and I have a lot of zines on my shelf waiting to be read. But I still find myself returning to this story again and again. It's my favorite kind of K/S story — the gentle, loving variety. This is a post "City on the Edge of Forever" story. Kirk goes to Vulcan with Spock to mourn Edith's death. Spock comforts him and. in the process, they discover each other. The most moving moment is when Spock calls Jim. "T'Solya." That always makes me cry.
I have only one nit to pick about this one. I think Spock would have gone out to look at the dying silver bird, simply because Jim asked him to. But that's a minor complaint.
As Spock gives Jim comfort in the story, so this story gives deep comfort to me. If you haven't read it for a while, you might enjoy another look now.[2]

Based on a snippet of Harlan Ellison's original script of City on the Edge of Forever. Spock brings Jim with him to Vulcan to help him heal after Edith's death. Soft and loving just as I love them, full of long conversations between the two friends, marks of mutual respect and care, and slow healing through a friend's love. [3]
