HimiKiyo is a rarepair in the Dangan Ronpa fandom. Canonically, the characters share a somewhat antagonistic relationship as a result of Korekiyo's murders of fellow classmates Angie Yonaga and Tenko Chabashira.
History
Although the game the two were introduced in, Danganronpa V3, was released in 2017, the pairing was virtually unheard of for the first year or two, with only a few obscure pieces of content and budding fans in roleplay communities and other corners of the fandom. Beginning in 2019, the ship began to get more recognition among some fans, largely as a result of content created by AO3 author platonics, also a prominent member of the Dangan Ronpa Amino community.
Common Tropes in Fanworks
Nonbinary Korekiyo
While in canon Korekiyo is only identified as male, he is one of the more effeminate among the cast, even making comments that Shuichi Saihara compared to the plot of a "manga for girls". In chapter 2, Kaito Momota asks why he talks "so girly" (In the original Japanese, it was instead asking if Korekiyo was an "Okama", an offensive slang term for gay men and trans women. The line caused some controversy.)[1]
It is later discovered Kiyo has a split personality of his dead older sister, who he models his appearance after. As such there is exploration of gender and identity in HimiKiyo (and other Kiyo-based) fanfiction.
Enemies to friends to lovers
Due to the strained canon relationship, it is common to start from a place where the characters don't like or trust each other.
