It also contains active forums for discussion and theorizing about canon, shipping debates, roleplay, and fanworks.

It was founded in Fall 1999 by Serebii, from whom the site takes its name. "Serebii" is a romanized Japanese name for the Pokémon Celebi, who is the site's mascot.[1]

In November 2019, just as Gen VIII was about to be released, the hashtag #IStandWithSerebii began trending on Twitter.[2] Because of Fan Reaction to Pokémon Gen VIII being virulently negative from some corners of the fandom, and Serebii himself have been getting hate for merely reporting news, which has sometimes included misinformation that was corrected. The trend, however, likely stems from a statement that Serebii made to Twitter on 10 November 2019 regarding the information about Sword and Shield that would be going up on Serebii upon the game's release:

As we approach new game coverage time, I feel like I need to reiterate how coverage works, since some people didn't get it last year and decided to trash me over it.

Game coverage is a process. Sometimes things appear to be one way but we then work out it's another.

Things get added as time progresses, we realise that thing A does action c rather than action B.

Research takes literally weeks.

That said, we'll try and get as much on over the launch weekend as humanly possible. I will do my best to not let you down.[3]
