"Sequel" refers to any work that continues the narrative of a prior piece of fiction, usually by focusing on events that happen following the ending. However, the word isn't usually used to refer to instalments of serialized works.
A sequel may be created by the creator of the original work, another author (with varying levels of legitimacy and acceptance), or by fans. An official sequel may or may not be welcomed by the fandom; while some may relish the thought of more canon material, other fans can find their headcanons and theories Jossed by the release of a sequel.
Sequels are a common premise for fanfiction, especially for stand-alone narratives that never receive a follow-up.
