1980: Con Report
This function made no pretense of being a convention but one of many travelling shows put on by Space, the Final Frontier, Inc. Unable to get one location for two days SFF settled on two locations,in Oakland and San Jose. The operating hours were 1Oam-6pm.
Holding onto the same format it had used during the days when science fiction conventions were at their peak, this function concentrated more on astronomy than fantasy. Scientist Jesco Von Puttkamer and astronomer Andrew Franknoi were the featured speakers. The master of ceremonies was local TV horror movie host John Stanley, whose appearance helped to boost the attendance.
SFF did have a dealer's room. It's [sic] film room ran "Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger, Hardware Wars, The Star Trek Bloopers, and 2001: A Space Odyssey."
SFF's only redeeming feature was its special guest, actor Peter Mayhew, who plays Chewbacca, the wookie in "Star wars" and "The Empire Strikes Back." Mayhew spoke before a large audience, telling curious antedotes [sic] about shooting the Star Wars films and life when you're 7'3" tall. [1]
