Summary

"Kirk and Spock visit Vulcan during a drought and have to share showers, a situation that strains both of their control over their concealed feelings."

Reactions and Reviews

Another charming story by an author known for her gently humorous and sometimes wonderfully silly stories.

This one does not disappoint, although it's more light K/S than most. Kirk joins Spock on a shore leave to his family home on Vulcan. Due to a planet-wide drought, water must be conserved and the story centers around Kirk and Spock trying to avoid taking a shower together.

I loved Spock's thoughts at the moment: "There wasn't enough 'the mind rules' control on all of Vulcan that would prevent him from revealing his desires under such circumstances."

Some really cute scenes ensue like with Amanda who can't argue with them about a camping trip and the sleeping bag scene where Spock is so sensitive, the very touch of the sleeping bag arouses him!

My favorite part, however, was the inevitable shower scene and the thoughts they both had when trying to hide their obvious responses. Really adorable![1]

"Save Water" by Dana Austin Marsh is a 13 page story in AMAZING GRACE 4. It's the third of three stories which are all first time stories, all very romantic stories, and all based some way around water. I personally like a little more variety than this, but I'm sure most readers won't be bothered by this.

I like Dana Austin Marsh a lot so I am going to pick on her to give a grammar lesson which many people can use. She's a good enough writer and has a solid reputation so I figure her ego wont be bruised by my nitpicking. On page 43, she uses "snuck" which is wrong unless you are using it in dialogue and the speaker is not very well educated. I realize MANY people make this error and that's why I am making a point of it. The use of "snuck" is as bad as the use of "aint." And it's jarring to people who know better.

The correct usage is "sneaked." Always has been, and always will be UNTIL the dictionary gives "snuck" proper clearance which so far as I know it hasn't. By the way, I did try "snuck" with my spell checker, and I noticed that it did not recognize it as a correct word, BUT it, also, did not suggest "sneaked" as an alternate.

Now that the "Good Grammar Commercial" is over, back to prime time and our story, "Save Water." This story is a total piece of fluff that we willingly suspend disbelief for so that it can work. Spock invites Kirk to visit his home on Vulcan. The sonics are out, and Vulcan is having a drought. Therefore, Amanda tells the two that they will have to shower together to save water.

Both men try to avoid showering, and some ridiculous things happen. Eventually, of course, they are forced into showering together. Once they both hit the shower nude, you know what is going to happen and the two men do not disappoint us. Overall the story is enjoyable and very pleasant to read. [2]

Sometimes both Humans and Vulcans can be extremely dense or perhaps the word distracted describes best the actions of Kirk and Spock in this fun adventure. Water is being rationed on Vulcan, making showering together a necessity. A great setup, don’t you think? So what do our enterprising young men do? They go out into the desert on a camping trip so they can justify remaining dirty and stinky for as long as possible. Oh, yes they eventually have to get in the dratted 5 x 5 cubicle together, which would have been quite roomy had it not been for their particular conditions! Lots of happiness and fun here for both the guys and the reader! [3]
