Sansûkh is a Lord of the Rings/The Hobbit fanfic by determamfidd that follows the characters of The Hobbit in the afterlife. It is extremely well-known within Hobbit fandom, and has inspired quite a bit of fanon. As of November 2022, it is the fic with the second-most kudos in The Hobbit fandom on AO3. In 2022, a webcomic adaptation by determamfidd and illustrated by Evelyn Rogers ( @fishfingersandscarves ) began, hosted on tumblr

Summary

From a Hobbitkink prompt:

The battle was over, and Thorin Oakenshield awoke, naked and shivering, in the Halls of his Ancestors.

The novelty of being dead fades quickly, and watching over his companions soon fills him with grief and guilt. Oddly, a faint flicker of hope arises in the form of his youngest kinsman, a Dwarf of Durin's line with bright red hair.

(Follows the story of the War of the Ring).

(Bagginshield, Gimli/Legolas) In which recovery takes time, the dead members of the Company take to watching Gimli as though he’s a soap opera, the living struggle with being left behind, Legolas is confused, Khuzdul is abused, and Thorin is four feet and ten inches of guilt and anger.

Fanon

One prominent part of Lord of the Rings/Hobbit fanon inspired by Sansûkh is the names of dwarven women. There are very few dwarven women in canon, and many fics in the fandom use the names given in Sansûkh.[citation needed]

Reactions and Reviews

Been going since 2013, only completed this year, but is the granddaddy for dwarven culture in the LOTR fandom. I'm so serious, most things? If it's dwarvish culture and you read it in a fanfiction, 9 times out of 10 it originated with Sansûkh.[1]

A fandom classic in the LOTR/Hobbit Fandom: Sansûkh by determamfidd. It’s an amazing epic spanning the whole War of the One Ring, with a whole cast of characters you’ll love. It follows Thorin Oakenshield after his death, as he watches over the living world from the afterlife. An absolutely amazing beauty of a fic I read over and over again.[2]

This fic is UNBELIEVABLE. The level of detail and craft put into all 51 chapters of this epic retelling of LotR is truly beyond words. It's just so good, no description could do it justice. The basic premise: Thorin Oakenshield wakes up dead in the halls of Mahal. He and his ancestors take to watching the goings-on in the world they've left behind, and come to follow one particular dwarf with great interest and consternation, as Gimli journeys with the Fellowship (and grows scandalously close to a certain elf along the way).[3]

The interactions Gimli and Thorin have together are A+, and we get as close to a canon re-telling of the War in the North as we’re gonna get. It’s a long one, but it’s one of the best Bagginshield fics I’ve ever read.[4]
