Sanji is one of the main characters in the anime and manga One Piece. He is the cook of the Straw Hat crew. His fighting style mainly consists of kicks and leg tricks.

Sanji is a liked character, his unique fighting style stands out and he has many epic fights through the series. Most of the criticism that One Piece fans have for Sanji comes from the fact that he is a womanizer and has almost died a few times because he's had to fight women. His infatuation with Nami is also seen as annoying sometimes, especially when takes a perverted undertone, such as Sanji being peeping at her while she bathes. There is also a notable instance in canon where Sanji ends up on an island populated by okama, which is often used by Sanji critics as evidence that Sanji is homophobic or transphobic.
In the English dub by 4Kids, Sanji underwent censorship to comply with the network's standards. In the original Japanese version, Sanji is often seen with a cigarette in his mouth. However, to make the character more suitable for a younger audience and adhere to content guidelines, 4Kids replaced Sanji's cigarette with a lollipop. This alteration sparked angry reactions from fans of the series over what they perceived as unnecessary and excessive censorship. Many said the cigarette made Sanji look like a badass, and the lollipop made him look childish.[1]
For a long time, Sanji's character tag on AO3 was "Vinsmoke Sanji" instead of "Sanji (One Piece)" - containing a surname that Sanji disavowed and which many fans did not think should be in his tag.[2] In 2024, "Vinsmoke" was removed from the character tag and other tags (such as relationships) involving the character.[3]
Shipping
Sanji/Zoro with Zoro is the most popular ship for Sanji, and also the most popular ship of the franchise overall. Other ships, although not as near as popular, include Sanji/Nami and Usopp/Sanji. Sanji x reader-insert fics have also grown in popularity in recent years.
