Sam Vimes is the captain of the Night Watch in Discworld, a series of fantasy novels written by Terry Pratchett.
Canon
The City Watch subseries
City Watch (Discworld Sub-Series) (or just "The Watch") is the unofficial name for the sub-series focusing on Ankh-Morpork’s Night Watch. Beginning with the novel Guards! Guards! and continuing on to almost another dozen books,[1] most of the series focuses on Sam Vimes or features him as a prominent character.

Sam Vimes is one of the most popular characters in the fandom. Fanart, meta, and discussion on Tumblr tends to focus on Vimes and the Watch, or Vimes and his wife Lady Sybil. As of June 2024 on AO3, Vimes/Vetinari slashfic is the most popular ship, with Vimes/Sybil and genfic also being fairly popular.
Tropes and Headcanons
A fairly common trope in fanfiction and fanart are AUs in which Vimes turns into a werewolf. In many of these AUs Vimes wolf form is a terrier based off the recurring ‘Vetinari’s Terrier’ themes throughout the books. For more on Vetinari’s Terrier see Sam Vimes/Lord Vetinari.
Many jokes and memes surrounding Vimes focus on him canonically being a smoker, many of these draw parallels between him and Adora Belle Dearheart (another canonical smoker in the Discworld novels).
