Samanthan "Sam" Rutherford is one of the main characters in Star Trek: Lower Decks.
Canon
Rutherford is a human ensign aboard the USS Cerritos, and a recent cyborg. He is an easygoing character with a passion for engineering. His closest companion on the ship is D'Vana Tendi, a friend he once tried to switch careers for just so they could watch a pulsar together.
In the season one finale, the loss of Rutherford's cybernetic enhancement causes him to lose much of his recent memory, including his memories of Tendi; however, they are both excited to "become best friends all over again".
Fandom
As of July 2021, Rutherford has appeared as a tagged character in almost 50 works on AO3, and a handful of works on Fanfiction.net. He is most commonly shipped with D'Vana Tendi. He has also been shipped with fellow engineer Andy Billups, and it has been speculated by fans that Rutherford has a crush on Billups in canon.
