The Romilly King plagiarism controversy is an ongoing controversy surrounding professional author Romilly King, who allegedly plagiarized lines from a Destiel fanfic in their own novel. It was subsequently discovered that King probably plagiarized at least three other fics.

Timeline

At some point prior to or on 29 June 2021, the author of the Destiel fic titled If You Hurt Me, That's Okay, Baby, blue_jack,[1] was notified of possible plagiarism of their work. It had been discovered that the novel "Paid to Kneel" by Romilly King contained several passages with uncanny resemblance to blue_jack's work.

Roughly a month later, on 4 August 2021, twitter user KokomRoily posted a thread[2] in which they highlighted the alleged plagiarism by comparing excerpts from both the fic and novel. This was when the controversy spread throughout fandom, with fans quickly rallying. In the hours after the thread was made, fans noticed other possible examples of plagiarism from a variety of fandoms in King's work.[3] The news was also spread on Tumblr by unforth[4] and fans quickly began searching through King's books to find other instances of plagiarism.

Eventually, several other fics were found to have been plagiarized. On 7 Aug 2021, a Discord was made in order to help coordinate the search for more plagiarized works.
