Canon Overview
Roberto De Niro is an alcoholic, chain smoking veteran reporter who likes to grumble about Meryl Stryfe's blind optimism throughout their forced mentorship. Underneath his gruff exterior, he is brave when the situation calls for it, and he understands how things work out in the desert sands. While repeatedly calling Meryl newbie rather than her name (much to her annoyance), he shows genuine care for her through both actions and advice about how to stay alive while chasing a story. In short, he acts as a buffer to her headstrong tendencies, though he does let himself be swayed to her overall plans more often than not, even to his detriment.
Roberto is a new character exclusive to Trigun Stampede; he does not appear in Trigun (manga), Trigun Maximum (manga), or Trigun (1998 anime).
