Rizzoli & Isles is a TNT television series based on the novels by Tess Gerritsen. The series stars Angie Harmon (Law & Order) as Boston police detective Jane Rizzoli, and Sasha Alexander (NCIS) as medical examiner Maura Isles. It aired for seven seasons.
Fandom
The show quickly gained a femslash following, as Rizzoli/Isles was felt to be "practically canon." Other pairings are rare and practically non-existent in the fandom. The other known pairings are: Casey Jones/Jane Rizzoli, Barry Frost/Frankie Rizzoli Jr and Sean Cavanaugh/Angela Rizzoli.
Crossovers with NCIS, Grey's Anatomy, Law & Order: SVU, Castle, and Once Upon a Time are popular on FFN. On AO3 the crossovers with Once Upon a Time, Law & Order: SVU, NCIS, Body of Proof, and Castle are popular.
Relationships/Pairings
Rizzles is the pairing name for Rizzoli/Isles.
Queerbaiting
Rizzles is one of the most notorious examples of queerbaiting, specifically femslash queerbaiting.
Particularly notorious is the fourth promo that appeared for Season 2 of the show. In it Rizzoli and Isles go through a series of speed dates with men before realizing that the only person perfect for them is each other.
In 2013, the showrunners and cast admitted they were guilty of queerbaiting in an interview with TVGuide.
