A rogue NID outfit kidnaps Daniel and the rest of SG-1 are caught up in a desperate race against time to rescue him.

This story is unusual in that it is written in both Jack's first person point of view and a tight third person point of view for Daniel. Somehow it works and works well. It begins with Jack contemplating his teammates' reactions to his activities during the capture of the rogue team. He realises that while Sam and Teal'c may not have liked his deception, they understood the need for it. Daniel, however, is seriously pissed off and Jack needs to make amends. Before he can do anything,Daniel is kidnapped, and so begins the chase to found out why, by whom, and, most importantly, where he is being held.

Jack visits Colonel Makepeace in prison and, following a discussion on loyalties and some wrangling and haggling with the powers that be, gets his help in tracking down the perpetrators. With Sam at the SGC organising the search, he, Makepeace and Teal'c hunt down and find where Daniel is hidden.

Daniel's torture is implied rather than described, and he spends his time concentrating on devising methods of coping with the pain, or remembering what Jack has told him about dealing with torture. Along with the pain and fear comes a certain amount of reflection on recent events and a little black humour. We see the stubborn and determined man who has faced the Goa'uld head on, and never flinched as he did so.

The rescue and confrontation with 'Mr Big' continues the underlying thread about loyalties by examining Makepeace's actions as he declares himself loyal to both the SGC, and to the NID in the shape of Maybourne. It also takes a look at how a soldier such as Makepeace views Daniel the civilian and his place, or lack of a place, within the SGC.

The final part has Daniel, with his teammates' help, recovering and refusing to play victim. Jack's experiences in special ops is alluded to in the manner in which he pragmatically explains to Daniel what he is feeling and why, and assures him that all of this will fade in time. It also examines the idea that no event happens outside of itself; all actions have consequences as the title, Ripples, reflects.

While Sam and Teal'c are very much part of the story, this is a Daniel and Jack friendship piece. It examines, from both men's perspectives, the ups and down of their friendship, their different outlook on life, and their shared respect and love for each other. All of this is done totally in character and without excluding or diminishing the importance of Sam and Teal'c as both friends and teammates.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story and I have read it many times since I first discovered it. It is tight, taut and fast in pace, but there is a great deal to think and reflect upon if you wish to delve deeper. Read it.
