Reactions and Reviews
I’m always having mixed feelings when I read this story. I feel disappointed because that scene wasn’t included in the movie; at least part of it because it wouldn’t been too much to ask for to have it all, but I’m also very satisfied to have at least this. Kate tackles it in a very beautiful way. [1]
If only. Two tiny words which say so much. If only they’d filmed the whole STVI scene where Kirk delivers that memorable line: “Come on, Spock. I need you.” If only they’d shown the meld that was originally in the script. IT WAS IN THE SCRIPT! What a gift that would have been for K/S fans everywhere and for believers in friendship as well. What a precious gem by which to remember our heroes. To our rescue comes Kate Singer. She translates so deftly the parts that were filmed, the parts on the original script and weaves them together with magic that brings the rest of the scene vividly to life. Anyone who is a fan of K/S needs this embellished story, needs to feel the pain of separation and stubborn denial that underscores every word that is spoken in Spock’s darkened cabin. We need to understand the reason their journey from the FalTorPan to Khitomer has been one filled with heartache and indecision. We learn that Kirk has spent the years trying to overcome the guilt he feels at letting David die to save Spock. Spock has spent them trying to accept that Kirk has turned from him to focus more and more on Carol Marcus. True to the self-sacrifice he’s always made for his Captain, Spock prepares to grasp one more small memory from his relationship with Jim before the door closes on them forever. With this, he tries to convince himself, he will be able to endure Kirk’s anticipated marriage to Carol Marcus and the empty years he knows will follow. It is never too late for this human to still take him by surprise! Kirk offers him the meld, pleads that Spock accept the healing. It isn’t so easy for Spock to accept this offer as it holds consequences of which Kirk has no knowledge. Can you not hear these words as though they truly were filmed in widescreen and Dolby Surround: “I belong here, Spock. You know that as well as I do. No. Not on the Enterprise. I know that has to come to an end. I mean that I belong with you.”
Oh, what a glorious closing that would have been to a saga of more than two decades. Thank you, Kate Singer, for rewriting a touching scene and making it instead a thing of wonder. A moment forever frozen in time and etched in our memory. What a gracious thing to do for us all. [2]
