Canon
Renji and Rukia were childhood friends growing up in dire poverty in the outer Rukon. They enrolled in the academy together to become shinigami, but then Rukia was found and adopted by Kuchiki Byakuya and they were separated for decades. They met again early in the canon story when Renji and Byakuya arrested Rukia for going rogue in the Living World. After many adventures in canon they married.
