Redshirts is a term from the Star Trek fandom which refers to the, often nameless, support characters that worked aboard the Enterprise. As supporting members of the cast, they were often the go-to when it came to having a character killed off to raise the stakes in any given episode.
As Star Trek: Lower Decks was the first show to focus on lower-ranking members of the crew, the two main characters became the first redshirt characters in starring roles.
