Re-Entry is a Qui-Gon/Obi-Wan series by Flamethrower.

story index, author's site

Author's notes:

Re-Entry is an alternate universe epic that spans time and possibility. Obi-Wan Kenobi, while still a young Padawan, suffers an injury and wakes up with all of the memories, experience, training, and Force-strength of Old Ben Kenobi. It isn't long before the Jedi discover that Anakin Skywalker, a five-year-old slave from the Outer Rim, has undergone the exact same change. Obi-Wan and Anakin bear the scars of harsh lessons learned; those who love them must learn those lessons quickly, before the mistakes of old are repeated.

Notes: Re-Entry is huge. Re-Entry is my baby. Re-Entry took almost ten years to complete.

To be fair, I got engaged, got married, moved house four times, had two children, and drove cross-country a LOT during that decade.

Re-Entry was begun in response to a challenge from a friend, who really wanted to see Old Ben stand in front of the Prequel trilogy Jedi Council and tell them off for being utter prats. She got this, instead.

It was only with the best of help that the series looks as good as it does. Jamie, Merry Amelie, WriteStuff, and Mrs Stanley are prime, wonderful betas, who deserve all of the credit for finding my awful, awful mistakes and making sure I fixed them. Cheers, guys!

Lauranna and Luthe and a few others whose names I can't remember (Sorry!) share credit for pitching in when I needed the extra help.

Re-Entry will be continued under a new title, Journey of the Whills, in September of 2011.

Re-Entry: Journey of the Whills, the sequel, is ongoing and as of June 2015 already longer than the first part.

Recs and Reviews

The Re-Entry series is an extraordinary gift to our fandom.

Flamethrower has been working on her epic for over a decade, and it just keeps on getting better. The premise is amazing -- Old Ben, with all of his brilliance and experience, wakes up back in his sixteen-year-old body. He's still Qui-Gon's Padawan and still just as in love with him as he was when he was originally 16.

Flamethrower excels at writing action scenes as well as romance, and her talents are on full display as she takes us through the entire SW saga with our heroes. Growing -- and growing together -- with each adventure, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon become ever more masterful and inspiring.

I've been astonished by the events in the current arc -- it's wonderful to be in the hands of a writer who is clearly ten light years ahead of us at all times.

You'll love it![1]

There are a lot of "Obi-Wan goes back in time" fanfics in Star Wars fandom, and a number of good ones have already been recced this month. Re-Entry, I must say, is a strong contender for my favorite of them all. It's a satisfying epic that you can really sink your teeth into, with lots of plot, both time-travel-related stuff and all-new stuff original to the story. It also has some very nice Jedi-related worldbuilding and subplots. And lastly, I particularly like the way that Obi-Wan's reintegration into the past is handled. Final note: I have not yet read the entire series, just the first three stories (Waking Dream, Diverging Paths, and Attainment), so those are the ones whose awesomeness I can personally vouch for and that I can rec specifically. :)[2]

Summary: Re-Entry is an alternate universe epic that covers a wide span of time, dealing with events and characters from the Star Wars Prequels, Original Trilogy, the Clone Wars, and many events and characters from the Expanded Universe (including a slew of original characters). Who the story is really about is up for interpretation, though the primary characters are Obi-Wan Kenobi, Qui-Gon Jinn, Anakin Skywalker, and the Jedi of the Order.

Summary of the first story: A simple injury during what should have been a routine mission brings shocking changes to the lives of Qui-Gon Jinn and Obi-Wan Kenobi, and may alter the future of the Jedi Order.

Reccer's Notes: There are lots of Star Wars AUs out there, about "What if Qui-Gon Jinn didn't die?" There are lots of SWAUs out there about "what if there was time-travel/a vision/some other plot device and Obi-Wan or Qui-Gon knew what was going to happen to Anakin and were able to teach him better so he didn't turn?" This story combines both plot devices, and is one of the better examples. It's not perfect, but it is very entertaining, and when I read it the first time I got sucked through all 500k words really fast.[3]

Words can not possibly describe my love for flamethrower's work. Waking Dream is the first part of her most fabulous Re-Entry series. Fair warning: flamethrower's fics are like Pringles. Once you start reading you can't stop![4]

When I first saw these series I bulked at the word count and went looking for something a little less long. When I was ready (and curious) enough to read it, I was taken aback at how well written and thought out it was. It was like reading a novel. I became drawn into the story quickly and was amazed at how it all flowed together. There were times where I had to look up characters (and occasionally found out those characters were actually OC’s) but that was more to do with my film only knowledge (which has now expanded because of these series!) Flamethrower draws you into this amazing universe and makes the old ‘gone back in time and is super powerful now’ au work. All the relationships, platonic and other wise, are well written and fleshed out. This is an gem to read and if you haven’t done so already, please go and read it! You will enjoy yourself![5]

Re-Entry is a huge story with incredibly compelling characters, a complex storyline that will keep you wanting more, and a perfect balance of emotional arcs, action, romance, and magic. Plus it’s got time travel.[6]
