Ray J. Sinkiewicz was a science fiction fan and charter member of the National Fantasy Fan Federation. He contributed to the letterzine Voice of the Imagi-Nation and was also a member of the Colorado Fantasy Society.
Activity
In May 1941, Sinkiewicz wrote to Voice of the Imagi-Nation, apparently in response to someone calling him "inconsistent" with the names he used for fan magazines. He stated that he'd been the one to invent "fanag" as a shortened form of "fan magazine", and conceded that the later invention "fanzine" was the better-sounding option. He also distinguished "fmz" from both words, stating that it was an abbreviation and not a word per se.
Although, I still believe I arrived at the only proper combination for 'fan' and 'mag'. 'Fanzine' is the proper word for a combination of 'fan' and 'magazine', while 'fmz' is, as I said, the proper abbreviation for 'fan magazine'. Now, I’ve said my say about the various methods of writing 'fan magazine', and if I still feel in the future as I now do about it, I shan't say anymore about the forms for fan magazine. If you watch in the future, I believe that you will see me use all three forms which mean fanzine.Voice of the Imagi-Nation issue 14 page 4 (May 1941)
