r/AmITheAsshole, commonly abbreviated as AITA, is a subreddit where users post personal accounts of interpersonal conflicts and disputes to receive judgments from other users if they or other people involved in the situations are considered assholes or not.
While /r/AmITheAsshole is not inherently fannish, accounts of conflicts regarding fannish topics are occasionally posted to the subreddit. In addition, the format used for posts is used for fandom memes and epistolary fanfiction, with authors creating fictitious /r/AmITheAsshole posts, often retelling in-universe conflicts through the perspective of canon characters.
Format
Often, posts on /r/AmItheAsshole describe extremely improbable events and many Reddit users believe many, if not most, of the posts on the subreddit are fake. This is often spoofed in AITA-style fics which relay events which occur in canon but sound highly unlikely to outsiders when written as a Reddit post. In this sense, AITA post-fics are also a type of Bystander fics.
On Archive of our Own, many fics in the AITA format use custom skins to mimic Reddit's site design, such as one template by spookedcroon.
