Con Reports

Quantum Con '94 is history.

Quantum Con '94 was a good con for a first time effort. Both Dean and Scott were there, although Scott had been filming in Canada and wasn't expected to make it to the convention. According to the people on the net (which was most of the attendees), no guests were actually confirmed until two (2) days before the convention!!! There were guest star panels on both Saturday and Sunday and many of the panels ran more than once which was convenient.

The hotel and the convention were reasonably priced. The convention was at the Pasadena Center which is a group of several buildings - which the convention used two - a big auditorium with graduated seating, and a large two story building with about 10 meeting rooms a lunch counter and a mini-theater. The auditorium where Scott and Dean made their appearence was very nice. As there were no stairs and the stage was over four feet off the ground there was almost none of the usual "can I get a hug?" stuff happening. ALL the seats the day Scott and Dean appeared were reserved so the earlier you bought your ticket, the better the seats.

There were three tracks of programing running on Saturday and two tracks on Sunday, with a variety of topics. On Saturday, many of the panels ran more than once, so you didn't have to choose between one panel over another.

There were quite a few guest stars and guest star panels both days. I ended up missing the guest star panels on Saturday because I was enjoying the fan fiction panel (that just didn't break up) and I never made it to the panel. There was a real room for the dealers room and the dealers room was almost totally and exclusively Quantum, which I didn't mind.

The biggest problem with the convention was that it was not as well attended as the two previous (QL creation) conventions. I felt the convention was poorly publicized and that ight account for the attendence. The convention was in an auditorium with inclined seating and there was even a balcony available. I think there were only about 300 or 400 people at the convention so the place looked almost empty.

The convention wasn't as much like a fan con as I would have liked and I hope that there is another Quantum Con next year. There is room for improvement and I hope they try to put it together again.

There was a nice costume contest on Saturday night which managed to bring out some rather creative costumes. The winner was the Carman Miranda costume. When the judges wanted to look at the costumes all together, the contestants came on stage in a conga line with Carmen Miranda in the lead. The workmanship was honored after the other awards were given out.

The charity auction was quite an event. When the auction started, there was about 150 people in the room. Most of the stuff was autographed by Scott and a little by Dean. Unfortunately a lot of stuff Dean signed was destroyed in the earthquake. Nothing sold for under $50 - even the box of dog biscuits used in the episode Blind Faith! I can't remember 10 items that sold for under $100. I think the average sale price was around $250! They had a lot of stuff! The item that went for the highest bid was an autographed sling Scott wore on Murphy Brown (included was a 4" x 6" photo with Candice and Scott with his arm in the sling) which sold for $1,400!

They sold 4 handlinks - an orange/pink/clear, two smoke, and the lego block multi-colored link. The orange one sold for $680, the two smoke went around $750 each and the lego block sold for $790! I was so poor, I wasn't sure if I would have money for dinner before I flew home that night so I couldn't really bid on anything (which is incredibly frustrating).

The auction was for charity and they raised $14,000!

NEWS FOR QUANTUM LEAP FANS - Dean hasn't done a movie and is enjoying his break. The Murphy Brown people are very happy with Scott and would love to have him as a regular cast member. Scott is only willing to make guest appearances at this time as he doesn't want to commit to another series.

Scott will be on tv in a movie called the Color of Darkness which will air this month.[1]
