Protective Imperative/Quickenings Collected is a 260-page slash crossover anthology by Rowan.
Half of the stories are Sentinel crossed with Stargate and half of the stories are Highlander. The Highlander stories are labeled as having "dark overtones."
The cover is by Shar.
This novel was formerly three zines. One of those zines is Protective Imperative. The other two are Quickenings 1 and 2.
The pagination in this zine is challenging; "Protective Imperative" is not numbered, and the two Highlander zines have their own page counts.
Contents
- Protective Imperative (Sentinel) (pages are not numbered but the story is 61 pages)
- Storm Power (Highlander) - On his way home, Richie takes refuge from a storm in a deserted bar, where he is expected. The storm is a Quickening Storm and a young Immortal is always welcome at such a time. He has almost forgotten the encounter when her returns home, but he goes back a short time later, and Duncan begins to get worried that Richie is reacting to the full moon. Methos has come across the situation before and tries to explain to a sceptical MacLeod exactly what is happening to his young lover. (Duncan/Richie, Richie and Methos/Others) (p. 3)
- The Fifth Horseman (Highlander) - When Duncan goes missing, Richie and Methos join forces to try and find him. Methos is somewhat concerned to discover that a former student of Kronos' is still alive. He knows that Methos caused the death of his mentor and he is out for heads. The 400 year old Duncan is no match for a man 4,000 years old but perhaps someone else is (Duncan/Richie/Methos. Duncan/Other, Richie/Other, Methos/Other). (p. 19)
- A Different Way of Playing the Game (Highlander) - An old friend of Methos' suddenly reappears after so many centuries of silence that he thought her dead. The reason for her disappearance is simple, as is the sudden appearance of a Watcher Joe has no record of. Earth isn't the only planet with Immortals. Duncan and Joe and invited to see how the Game is played on another world, a world which needs their help, and going without Richie is unthinkable. (Duncan/Richie, Duncan/Others, Methos/Others) (p. 68)
- First Contact (Highlander) - When Earth is finally contacted by an alien race, the contact isn't made by diplomats but by slavers, and a Hunter with a grudge sells them Richie. As Richie adjusts to life on a different world, help comes from an unexpected source. (Duncan/Richie, Richie/Other, Methos/Other) (p. 3)
- A Strange Relationship (Highlander) - An AU. It started as a fantasy. Duncan and Tessa had both thought about enlivening their sex life with a young partner. One night, it became more than a fantasy. Cruising the streets, in search of a suitable candidate, Duncan found a young pre-Immortal. Richie's life was about to change quite dramatically. (Duncan/Richie/Tessa) (p. 29)
- Advanced Course (Highlander) - Richie had finished his training but there were still things he had to learn. His childhood wasn't happy. Living for centuries, with a bitterness in his soul, was not an option. So Duncan set out to make Richie face up to the things he'd made himself forget, with surprising results. (Duncan/Richie) (p. 54)
