Sofia is the main character of the Disney Junior series Sofia the First.

Canon

Character Biography

Sofia lived a simple life with her mother Miranda who was a shoemaker in Dunnwiddie village in the Kingdom of Enchancia. She and her mother were summoned to the palace because King Roland II needed new slippers. It led to her mother and the King to fall in love and marry not too long after. Which of course made her “a Princess overnight”.

In the beginning, she and her new sister Amber don't get along much but her new father tries to make her feel welcome by hosting a ball in her honor. He also gives Sofia the Amulet of Avalor, which grants her magical abilities (and sometimes curses her when she misbehaves).

The series follows the young girl as she transforms from a village kid to a royal to a magical Protector of the Ever Realm.

Name

Sofia is not given a last name in the pilot but later her biological father is revealed by the show creator. It is also said that Sofia is a mix of two nationalities. Gladiz (a kingdom similar to Spain) and Freezenburg (similar to Scandinavia).

Birk Balthazar, who was from Freezenburg, was Miranda’s first husband. It's possible Sofia's name was a combination of both her parents, making her Sofia Cordova-Balthazar.

When her mother marries Roland her name may have changed to the Royal family name “Winslow”. [1]
