There’s a reason why this is the #1 Ten/Simm story on so many people’s reclists, and it’s without question a “classic”. This fic more or less established the conventions for Year That Never Was fic, and set the scene for so many fanworks that followed. For that reason, you should read it, and you should also read it because versaphile was the one who wrote it. This story is profound, it’s terrifying, it’s beautiful. It’ll break your heart and confront you. It’s also ridiculously explicit and kinky, so there’s that. I’d recommend reading it on dreamwidth, or downloading the compiled PDF - but be aware about 4 more chapters were published after it was made.[1]
Reading Praxis is like watching a classic horror film. The plot twists are surprising, unsettling, fascinating, and witty, while the worst of the violence is off-screen. Beware it’s not only Doctor/Master but Doctor/Master/Lucy and a little bit of Doctor/Jack Harkness in the beginning! It’s unlike anything other I’ve ever read from this Year…the book has 4 parts. What is really radical is the second part of the book, when the Doctor is de-aged to a child and presented as John Saxon to the world. He grows attached to Lucy and the Master. After he’s aged to his normal form,to gain the Master’s trust, he closes away his Archangel-psychic-energy-plan, forgets it and definately falls for the Master and Lucy. This is the third part of the book and is the sex-richest part of it. In the end he helps to rule the Empire in his own way.
