Reactions and Reviews
In which Avon gets his teddy bear; which the crew give him because it's Blake's birthday and they hope it'll amuse Avon enough to make him be nice to Blake all day. This is an unashamed PWP. There's some nice understatement in it, especially early on, where Avon's feelings are hinted at rather than stated.[1]
(The Liberator crew gets Avon a birthday present.) All the stuff about the present-wrapping is delightful ('present' is not a euphemism - I like the box and the tape), as is Avon's slight sadness about the bear. This fic is based on the premise that Avon needs to be bribed to be nice to Blake, but in this zine that seems very much not to be true. 'Playtime' is just one of many fics that are about how much Blake and Avon like each other and how well they could get on if they relaxed a bit. Some might find that unrealistic or not what they want from this ship, in which case don't go for this zine, because it's almost all like that. The writers are universally very strong, though, and anyway I really like the niceness. It's an absolute pleasure to take a break from angst and power struggles found in other fics, although I am glad to have the variety.[2]
