Reactions and Reviews
1988
PHLOD [is] set pre-K/S, is told partly from McCoy's point of view. Spock is tricked into taking part in an unauthorised experiment by an Admiral in Starfleet Security, his brain waves used to programme an android duplicate. I have some reservations about the Admiral, but it would be unrealistic to suppose that Starfleet doesn't have its share of unpleasant types. The occasional change of point of view is initially distracting, but the reader soon becomes accustomed to it; also, it allows personal reaction in a story that could not be wholly told in the first person. A very enjoyable story. Full of twists and turns. But it has a plot which is something I prize highly in my reading. I presume Data is a prototype for Spock's double? [2]

I liked having this story partly in the McCoy person, It gives a comic look at the situation between Kirk and Spock, their interaction as seen through a third person’s mind and eye. Spock is being subjected to a scientific experiment without his consent. Kirk is frantic because his friend is missing and basically runs around in circles. The plot had potential but didn’t deliver." [3]
