The Wallflower started out as manga in 2000 (still ongoing), and in 2006 was turned into an anime as well. As of 2010, the series was adapted into J-drama, staring KAT-TUN's Kazuya Kamenashi. While some anime or manga-based fandoms see a surge in popularity after being adapted into a live action drama--especially one staring a Johnny--this did not prove to be the case with Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge.

In the official English translation, the series is called The Wallflower. Scanlation groups and much of the fandom refer to the series as Perfect Girl Evolution, a title more in keeping with the manga's storyline.

Synopsis

After being rejected by the boy she liked, Sunako Nakahara gave up her femininity and retreated into darkness. Her happy life enjoying horror movies and quality time with her anatomical models is interrupted by four bishounen. The "creatures of the light" have been tasked by their landlady, and Sunako's aunt, to transform Sunako into a proper lady. If they succeed, they go rent free. If they fail, their rent will skyrocket.

Unfortunately for Kyohei, Takenaga, Yuki, and Ranmaru, Sunako isn't willing to be transformed without a fight.

Wallflower Fandom

The Wallflower is a tiny fandom.

Kyohei/Sunako is by far the most popular ship in the fandom. It is semi-canonical, with 20+ volumes of UST behind it. The pairing can be extremely difficult to write while keeping Sunako and Kyohei in character. Sunako has the tendency to get massive nosebleeds when she's exposed to "Creatures of the Light," such as the super beautiful Kyohei. She has no interest in romance or love. Kyohei is hardly any better on the romance front, although he has shown some hints of recognizing his deepening feelings for Sunako.

Fan writers deal with Sunako and Kyohei's difficult relationship in a variety of ways. Some writers choose to make Sunako more open and ladylike; others create AU versions of the characters.

Takenaga/Noi are a canonical het couple who also appear in fanfic. There is a small segment of fans who write slash (yaoi) fanfic centered around Kyohei, Takenaga, Ranmaru, and Yuki, in various combinations.
