Lieutenant Commander Paul Stamets is a main character on Star Trek: Discovery.
Canon
He was chief engineer aboard the USS Discovery and a science officer specializing in astromycology (the study of fungi in space). He was part of the team that discovered the Mycelial network and helped develop the spore drive propulsion system. He serves as the chief engineer of the USS Discovery. Stamets, along with his partner, Dr. Hugh Culber, are the first openly gay regular characters in a Star Trek television series.
