Reactions and Reviews
This is one of my favorite stories ever. It's just amazing. It's one of those stories where the boys slide into the slash in a wonderful way, and they realize that everything they've always wanted is right there next to them. One of my absolute favorite lines goes something like, "Maybe we've always been a little bit in love" - and isn't that just so perfectly true?" [1]
This story starts off with a wonderful Harlequin classic: Starsky and Hutch pretend to be a gay couple. It all starts off when Kiko, Hutch’s ‘little brother’ from the Big Brother program, comes out and what’s more, wants advice on how to handle it from Hutch who he assumes is in a relationship with Starsky. Starsky and Hutch end up playing along, not wanting to disrupt Kiko’s fragile acceptance of his own sexuality, and end up making a few realizations along the way. The story starts out this way, but there’s a lot more to it and it quickly moves beyond that single premise. Set post-series, Starsky and Hutch are now private detectives and in the midst of the Kiko situation, we also get two investigations for plot: a teenage runaway and a famous singer with a verbally and emotionally abusive estranged husband. Add on a peek into Hutch’s unhappy childhood (always a favorite among authors) and you’d think from the description that there’s way too much going on for a single story. Lamardeuse handles all of these plot threads wonderfully though and never lets the reader get lost or confused. It’s a great story with plenty of romance and plot plus a nice happy-ever-after for the guys who not only end up together, but also get a wonderful unofficial family and the prospect of a long life together in domestic bliss. ^_^ [2]
She finally finished it!!! It's got everything... grown up Kiko and Molly, Post-Sweet Revenge PI's Starsky and Hutch, and a shared household. It seems Kiko's fallen in love, and he's looking to Starsky and Hutch for guidance. Not because they're womanizers (who've never really gotten to keep any girl they've been with) and he wants some pointers. Noooo. Kiko's in love with a guy, and he thinks S&H will understand and share their insight because he thinks they're together. Except they're not, not really, not yet, but Kiko's such a soft-hearted kid, they don't want to ruin his illusion. And they want to keep an eye on him, so some vulture doesn't pluck him out of the nest and ravish the poor innocent. And the fanfic cliche dies right there. This is not just "we were pretending and fell in love for real". This is something far deeper. It's got love, romance, a murder case, a beautiful woman in distress, strange feelings of jealousy from a certain partner, and hot, hot, sex. Lamardeuse writes a beautiful Hutch. He's contemplative, angsty, and is so adorably sexy throughout this story that you can't help but love him. Coupled with her equally beautifully written Starsky - brash yet unsure, sexy, and seductive... what a combination. From the first kiss to the first time they get nekkid, this is a romp well worth curling up in your favorite chair for hours to finish. [3]
I can't rec this story enough. It's one of those "God, I wish I'd written this" kind of stories, if you're a writer. The characterization is dead on for me. She makes the sex sexy and omg how rare is this, In CHARACTER. I could weep for joy.
Regardless of the fandom, I haven't read a lamardeuse story yet that isn't lovely, insightful and totally engaging. Her Sentinel fiction is definitely worth giving up some of your precious time for, too. [4]
I want to be her when I grow up. (Or you, but that's another story)The best, best thing, is the in character sex. Men. Having sex. Beautiful.
I'm glad she finished it so I could rec it. [5]
I loved this so much -- and I'm glad I didn't wait for her to finish it, because it was well worth the wait for each chapter. She is definitely very talented, and I can't wait to get around to reading more of her stories. [6]
Set post-Sweet Revenge, the boys are sharing a home as friends, and a new life as detectives. When Kiko comes out to Hutch, the latter discovers his young friend felt comfortable confiding in his mentor because he believes Starsky and Hutch to be gay as well. This sets in motion a chain of events. At first, the two cops go along with Kiko's misconception to set the boy's mind at ease. But as they play their roles, they gradually realize that what they actually have between them isn't all that different from romance. This is such a lovely, gradual transition for our guys. They're already in a relationship. They just hadn't realized what kind of relationship it was. Add to that an interesting new case and some lingering demons from Hutch's past, and you have a wonderful, complete read. [7]
